I am maybe just one half-step ahead of Costello in understanding my computer.

Posted by Carol on June 12, 2009

You have to be old enough to remember Abbott and Costello, and too old to REALLY understand computers, to fully appreciate this. For those of us who sometimes get flustered by our computers, please read on… If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today, their famous sketch, ‘Who’s on First?’ might have turned out something like this:

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?

COSTELLO: Thanks. I’m setting up an office in my den and I’m thinking about buying a computer.

COSTELLO: No, the name’s Lou.

ABBOTT: Your computer?

COSTELLO: I don’t own a computer. I want to buy one.

COSTELLO: I told you, my name’s Lou.

ABBOTT: What about Windows?

COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in here?

ABBOTT: Do you want a computer with Windows?

COSTELLO: I don’t know. What will I see when I look at the windows?

ABBOTT: Wallpaper.

COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.

ABBOTT: Software for Windows?

COSTELLO: No. On the computer! I need something I can use to write proposals, track expenses and run my business. What do you have?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?

ABBOTT: I just did.

COSTELLO: You just did what?

ABBOTT: Recommend something.

COSTELLO: You recommended something?

COSTELLO: For my office?

COSTELLO: OK, what did you recommend for my office?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yes, for my office!

ABBOTT: I recommend Office with Windows

COSTELLO: I already have an office with windows! OK, let’s just say I’m sitting at my computer and I want to type a proposal. What do I need?

COSTELLO: What word?

ABBOTT: Word in Office.

COSTELLO: The only word in office is office.

ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.

COSTELLO: Which word in office for windows?

ABBOTT: The Word you get when you click the blue ‘W’.

COSTELLO: I’m going to click your blue ‘w’ if you don’t start with some straight answers. What about financial bookkeeping? You have anything I can track my money with?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: That’s right. What do you have?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: I need money to track my money?

ABBOTT: It comes bundled with your computer.

COSTELLO: What’s bundled with my computer?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?

ABBOTT: Yes. No extra charge.

COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer? How much?

ABBOTT: One copy.

COSTELLO: Isn’t it illegal to copy money?

ABBOTT: Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.

COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?

(A few days later)

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?

COSTELLO: How do I turn my computer off?

ABBOTT: Click on ‘START’…………..

And now a musical interlude…

Posted by Carol on May 17, 2009

Let’s take a break from all this septic system/house hunting news for a musical interlude.

I found this on Vicki Courtney’s blog, Virtue Alert and fell in love with Jon Schmidt’s music.  This is Love Story Meets Viva La Vida.

…wanna win a gift basket?

I thought you might, so I’m going to be giving away 3 Banana Nut Cheerios Gift Baskets right here at this very blog this weekend.

Three lucky winners will win everything you see in here (fruit not included) except that you will be getting a VIP coupon for Banana Nut Cheerios rather than an actual box (but the box shows up better in pictures).

I have tasted the Banana Nut Cheerios and they are simply de-lish! More to come on that on Saturday, but for now, here’s what you have to do for a chance to win this very banana-y gift basket.

On Saturday, or any time over the weekend, post a recipe, any recipe you choose on your blog then come back here and link to my recipe carnival, aka Saturday Stirrings.  If you don’t have a blog, post a recipe in the comments section of the Saturday Stirrings post.

Then, on Sunday evening at 9 pm EST, I will use a random number generator to select three winners from all the Mr. Linky participants as well as any recipes in the comments.

That’s it. It’s so easy a caveman could do  it. (Didn’t I hear that someplace before?)

Now go bananas and get a recipe ready to post on Saturday!

Great Reads

Posted by Carol on January 29, 2009

Wow, you guys are the best! The Barnes & Noble Gift Card is your prize to gain at the Bloggy Giveaway Carnival, but I feel like I’m the winner because of all the great book suggestions you have been leaving me in the comments.  Your ideas will keep me busy for a very long time.

I was going to do a compilation post with all the titles listed in one place, but decided against it because the comments also give the reasons the person is suggesting the book and I think you will enjoy reading that, too.

So go! Go now to this post and read the comments and find a great book to start this weekend. Oh, and if you haven’t entered my giveaway, what are you waiting for??

Bloggy Giveaways Carnival ~ Barnes & Noble Gift Card!! – Time’s UP!

Posted by Carol on January 25, 2009

Time’s Up! Thanks so much for all your great book suggestions! I have already read some of them, but you reminded me of some I probably want to read again. If you haven’t already, I suggest you take a look at the comments and start reading something!

Anyway, the moment you’ve all been waiting for…..(drum roll…..) Random.org helped me pick commenter #86, better known as Icedream,  as our winner.  I will try to contact you by email for your snail mail address. Congrats!  To see who won all the other awesome Giveaways, click here.

Bloggy Giveaways Quarterly Carnival Button

I almost missed this quarter’s Giveaway Carnival. It just sort of snuck up on me. What a shame that would have been if I had missed it, because you would have missed out on a chance to win what I think is a pretty nice prize, if I do say so myself!

I am offering one lucky winner a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card. The cool thing is that even if you don’t have a Barnes and Noble store near you, this card can be used on their website – bn.com

There are 3 ways to enter this giveaway for a total of three chances to win.

  1. Leave me a comment recommending a book you think I should read this year and why.
  2. Subscribe to my blog and leave me a second comment letting me know you did.
  3. Go to the TBloG and subscribe to its feed, leaving me another comment to let me know you did. (If you want to leave a comment there, too, that would be great, but I can’t count it toward the contest.)

If you’re already a subscriber here and/or at the TBloG, just let me know and that will get you entered as well.

That’s all.  I will randomly choose a number on Friday evening, January 30th at 10 pm EST. Whoever’s comment matches that number will be the winner. It’s that simple.

I will post the winner at the top of this post as well as contact them by email.

For more super great and generous giveaways, check out the Bloggy Giveways Carnival!

A New Year’s Meme

Posted by Carol on January 2, 2009

Jo-Lynne at Musings of a Housewife did this fun meme for the New Year. Since 2008 was the first full year of blogging for me, I decided to play along, too!

So here we go – on the 2nd day of 2009, I give you the first line of the first post of each month of 2008.

If you give a mouse a cookie a man a new TV

Written in the style of the childrens’ book, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, it’s the true story of what happened when my husband got a new TV.

My driver’s license expired on January 31st and being the procrastinator that I am, I waited until January 31st to head on down to the DMV to renew my license.

(Click on the sentence if you want to visit the post; I’m not sure why it’s not highlighted like the other ones.)

This post is about my very exciting trip to the DMV and how reading blogs could improve the lives of the DMV employees.

Technically, today is really Sunday, if you believe in using a calendar, but this is DeeDee’s recipe carnival and since she is kind enough to host it, I will play nice and call it by her title.

This is a Saturday Stirrings recipe for easy burritos.  And, btw, Saturday Stirrings is now hosted right here at I Throw Like a Girl on, you know, Saturdays. Go figure.

How appropriate that today is April Fool’s Day.

This post is all about my visit to the cardiologist.  I realize this makes me sound slightly geriatric, especially if I keep on writing about doctor’s appointments and my ailments.

You asked for more pictures on my blog, so I am attempting to post some of our dogs.

Posting pictures was the bane of my existence for the longest time. This post was the one that got me past that bloggy learning curve.

We went to the Saturday evening service at our church for the first time ever.

This is a YouTube video of Bebo Norman’s song  I Will Lift My Eyes.  I post a worship song every Sunday.

In our house, we never rarely use bad language.

In this post, my teenage daughter explains why using a certain bad word might not be so bad after all.  Hmm…

Self explanatory!

It’s the Backwards Edition of Works for Me Wednesday (insert Game Show music here).

Here I asked for advice on starting a new blog. The blog that I had in mind actually just launched yesterday!

Linda at 2nd Cup of Coffee wrote a debriefing post after doing such a wonderful job of hosting “I See What You’re Saying”.

This is a follow up post on the vlog I posted at Linda’s vlog carnival.  It includes a picture of a New Jersey Longhorn.

I wish I had baskets and coffee for everyone, but I think my son would get fired if I tried to get that much free Starbucks coffee.

I announced the winners of the Bloggy Giveaways Carninval. How fun is that?

My dear friend, Sylane Mack is the President of a wonderful ministry called Transformed by Grace.

This is the guest post written by my friend who just launched her new blog yesterday.  Please go check it out!

Happy New Year!

Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!

Posted by Carol on December 7, 2008

I’ve gotten several compliments on the snow on my blog.  I wish I could take credit for it because I love it, too.

The snow is actually courtesy of  WordPress.  They did it last year, too.  There is a way for me to turn it off, but why would I want to do that?

So turn the volume up on your computer and get in the mood for some snow whether it’s real or virtual!

A Book Meme

Posted by Carol on November 26, 2008

Heather at Not a DIY Life tagged me with a meme.

These are the rules
1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 56.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next two to five sentences.
5. Don’t dig for your favorite book, the cool book or the intellectual one. Pick the Closest.
6. Tag five people to do the same

The nearest book right is Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend.  Here’s what it says…”Time after time, Steve would insist on Frank’s spending unpaid time at the office on important projects. Frank had even switched his vacation schedule twice at Steve’s insistence. But the final straw was when Steve began calling Frank at home. An occaisional call at home Frank could understand. But almost every day, during dinnertime, the family would wait while Frank had a telephone conference with his boss”.

So, who wants to play?  I’m not going to tag anyone since it is the day before Thanksgiving and we’re all busy, but if you want to go ahead and jump in!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Yippee! A Giveaway…Coming Soon!

Posted by Carol on November 20, 2008

Oh, I am so glad I decided to continue Saturday Stirrings!  Do you want to know why?  Well, I’m gonna tell you anyway.

Just today, I was contacted by the nice folks from Progresso and they offered me three Progresso Perfect Recipe Gift Baskets to give away!! (Doing a happy dance!)

The gift baskets include a free coupon for Progresso Broth (all-natural Progresso Chicken, Reduced Sodium Chicken and Beef-flavored broths), a recipe card holder, recipe box and wicker basket, as well as a set of serving spoons and a spoon rest.

Progresso’s broths are 99% fat free and contain no preservatives, artificial flavors, or MSG! They even come in convenient, re-sealable 32oz cartons.

I am so excited because this Giveaway fits so perfectly with Saturday Stirrings! You know recipes, coupons, samples, spoons…I think there’s a theme here somewhere. It doesn’t take much to get me excited!

I am holding the giveaway this weekend in conjuction with Saturday Stirrings. There will be several ways to be entered and I will give the details on Friday evening when I post my Saturday Stirrings recipe along with Mr. Linky.

But….if you want to get a head start, I will give one entry to anyone who writes about this giveaway on their blog between now and Saturday. You can just mention Saturday Stirrings and the Giveaway with a link to my blog.  Leave me a comment to let me know you did it and I will make sure you are entered.

Edited to add: I mistakenly thought each basket came with a sample of the Progresso Broth. They do not.  They DO include a coupon for free Progresso Broth. I apologise for any confusion.
